Job description


An opportunity has become available at our Head Office (Cape Town) in the Outdoor Footwear Division for a Footwear Technologist.

The incumbent will be responsible for the measurements, fits and grading of all Cape Union Mart, K-Way and Tread and Miller Footwear and act in an advisory capacity to the Footwear Department. The purpose is to manage and improve on footwear quality standards and enhance the Footwear ranges.

Our ideal candidate should possess a distinct passion for footwear with sound attention to detail. The successful candidate will have the ability to align with the company vision, be self-motivated and actively involved in the footwear merchandising process in the applicable area of responsibility. In addition, the successful candidate should have the high energy levels, resilience and confidence required for this fast-paced, exciting and dynamic retail environment.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

Footwear Measurements
  • Assessment and feedback of samples from Suppliers
  • Technical elements of the fitting and quality throughout product development and the approval process
  • Risk assessment of product quality standards/ production issues (including safety/ wear trials/ performance/ make-up and construction) and potential production issues
  • Developing new silhouettes and approving fits with the Buyers
  • Footwear grading to be consistent and accurate across categories and seasons

Fit Sessions
  • Schedules and arranges fit sessions with models and relevant buyers
  • Lead fit sessions from initial sample through to final production.
  • Ensuring clear and concise fit comments are communicated to suppliers or factories.
  • Work closely with the Buying team to support the fit development process from a technical perspective.
  • Provide advice on construction, pattern and fit for the buyers’ consideration

Supplier Management
  • Implementation of new procedures to ensure supplier base conformance
  • Managing the day to day relationships with the suppliers to ensure that they deliver and are operating to the required technical standards
  • Supplier returns, recalls and cancelation analysis
  • Assessment and feedback of samples from Suppliers
  • New vendor assessment in correlation with buying team

QA Reports
  • Bulk audit assessments
  • Management of technical processes during the manufacturing process
  • Fittings and technical assessments for footwear
  • Upfront technical assessments on new developments to ensure speed to market and minimal re-sampling

Off Bulk/Shipment Samples
  • Footwear from off bulk/shipment samples to be measured and compared to approved PP sample and/or graded spec
  • Raise grading issues with the relevant buyer for further action

Store Quality queries
  • Store visits to assess the quality of products delivered
  • Conduct the investigation and supply the relevant buyer with relevant information

Tech Pack Templates
  • Creation of seasonal tech packs templates
  • Compile technical briefs and communicate clearly on all technical-related issues
  • Approval/ rejection of fabric /material and other relevant testing procedures
  • Communicate changes to overseas Suppliers
  • Development of technical manuals in accordance with the company’s processes and standards
  • Amendments to the tech pack is made accordingly after fit sessions.

Research and Development
  • Research and development of new components to ensure best commercial quality
  • Volume and repeat line material and component testing and evaluation
  • Implementation of new procedures and reports to eliminate risk and improve supplier performance
  • Work closely with the Buyer to ensure product specifications and technical packs meet aesthetic and technical expectations
  • Work with industry on new product developments and introduce innovation into existing ranges (Product)
  • Monitoring and continuously improving quality

Analysing customer feedback to improve product reliability


Requirements


Knowledge, Experience & Qualifications Required
  • Matric & Graduate qualification in a related field
  • 3 – 5 years related industry/ retail footwear /manufacturing work experience
  • Extensive experience across Babies/ Kids/ Ladies and Mens Footwear will be an advantage
  • In-depth knowledge of pattern/ lasts/ outsole moulds and fitting
  • Strong commercial eye to identify fit for purpose
  • Knowledge of footwear manufacturing, testing methods and standards
  • Good knowledge of and experience in working with vendors
  • Exposure to in-house systems (e.g. Product Life Cycle Management (PLM)) or internet- based systems
  • PC Literate – MS Excel (Intermediate)
  • Corel Draw would be an advantage
