Job description
GENUS (DSI-NRF Centre of Excellence in Palaeosciences), University of the Witwatersrand, seeks a communications officer to oversee its science communication needs. The communication officer must be a prolific writer providing fresh and engaging content, elevating South African palaeoscience. The applicant should be a strong communicator to multiple audiences across traditional, digital, and social media platforms, proactively promoting the incredible research and initiatives that GENUS supports. We seek someone who can work with academic contributors to develop and curate compelling and engaging content for our internal and external audiences.
The communication officer position is a two-year full-time appointment, renewable, subject to securing additional funding.

Duties: The position's primary purpose is to pro?le GENUS ( www.genus.africa ) to all our stakeholders. Responsibilities involve writing, editorial, and producing video content for different media channels. The incumbent should be familiar with multiple communication technologies to depict applicable content for media, publicity, and other purposes.
 Qualifications and job requirements:
  • A relevant honours or masters degree preferable with a background in science communication, science journalism, or experience in a science-related field is advantageous
  • Excellent English written, spoken and communication skills. Proficiency in one or more official South African languages is a plus
  • Outstanding writing and visual portfolio
  • Excellent research and interviewing skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to work to strict deadlines
  • Five years of relevant working experience
  • Excellent computer skills
  • Drivers licence
  • Motivated, energetic, creative and an excellent visual eye
  • Must have a good understanding of science, research, and higher education

Additional details: Must be willing to work after hours or on weekends to attend and promote events if required.
Remuneration:  A competitive package is commensurate with the appointment level.
Amount of travel: Some travel required.
Work at home: Flexible with approval from the line manager.
