mothers2mothers (m2m) is an Africa-based NGO that unlocks the potential of women to eliminate paediatric AIDS and create healthy families across ten sub-Saharan African countries. m2m trains, employs, and helps empower women living with HIV to work as community healthcare workers in understaffed health centres and underserved communities. Through a peer-to-peer approach, these ‘Mentor Mothers’ deliver a range of health services, advice, and support to women and their families. Started in Cape Town, South Africa in 2001 with an initial focus on preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, m2m has innovated and built on its strengths and now provides family-centred support for a range of related health and social issues spanning pregnancy, birth, childhood, and adolescence. m2m is seeking a highly-skilled and organised graduate to work as an Intern with the m2m’s Head Office department of Programmes and Technical Support. Your role will be to support our Senior Technical Advisor (STA) for Early Childhood Development (ECD) and Orphans and other Vulnerable Children (OVC) by assisting with formative research for new projects, gathering and adapting programme documents, supporting quality assurance and improvement initiatives, contributing creatively to programmatic initiatives and training, ensuring high-quality abstract/manuscript development, and supporting business development, reporting and communications, under the leadership of the Senior Technical Advisor.

Key Performance Areas:
Programme start-up support 

  • Support the realignment, adaptation and branding of start-up programmatic package of materials for new programmes/projects/countries with guidance from the STA – ECD/OVC.
  • Support planning, implementation and roll-out of new ECD or OVC programmes.

Programme Quality Assurance/Quality improvement (QA/QI) support 

  • Assist in coordination of routine or ad hoc Head Office led meetings , training or workshops relating to ECD or OVC programmes, including documentation, synthesis, and follow-up of action plans with responsible staff.
  • Contribute to the development/adaptation of programme SOPs and tools with guidance from the STA – ECD/OVC.
  • Coordinate and participate in regular Programmes/SI consolidated meetings with countries including support in documentation.
  • Contribute to identification, adaptation, development of ECD job aids, activities, materials, as needed.
  • Develop and maintain professional understanding of relevant ECD and OVC knowledge and developments.

Business development, reporting and Communications support 

  • Support the STA – ECD/OVC with areas of concept note/proposal development, as needed.
  • Write and/or contribute to the development of conference and journal abstracts.
  • Develop reports, presentations, and other communication materials for projects and programmes, as needed.
  • Research and write technical reports.
  • Document project successes, challenges, and lessons learned.
  • Participate in professional meetings, as appropriate.
Job Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Undergraduate degree in ECD, public health, HIV/AIDS, social sciences or related field.
  • 1-2 years’ experience in non-profit/NGO/international development or philanthropic programme or project management, with a focus on public health, HIV/AIDS, vulnerable children services and/or ECD.
  • Experience with ECD, vulnerable children and/or RMNCH, PMTCT programme implementation or any relevant public health or community work
  • Experience working in sub-Saharan Africa and with multi-cultural teams.


  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including cultural sensitivity.
  • Creative and innovative thinker.
  • Appetite to learn, grow technical knowledge, and take initiative.
  • Excellent writing skills including reports and assisting proposal writing.
  • Strong research, analytical and interpretative skills.
  • Highly organized, reliable, with excellent attention to detail.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple tasks and work to strict deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a team.
  • Ability to work under high pressure, meet deadlines, monitor and follow-up on pending matters under minimum supervision.
  • Tech-savvy, strong IT skills essential, including MS Word, Excel, Powerpoint and online meeting applications, including Zoom.
  • Willingness to travel in Sub-Saharan Africa.
  • Excellent verbal and written English language skills are essential.
